Ballard is distinctly Norwegian. Here Swedes, Finns, Danes and Norwegians all live in this community incorporated in 1888 and annexed in 1906 by Seattle. While the Ballard neighborhoods are still very Scandinavian, it is growing more multi-ethnic.

The marine industry has historically been a pivotal one here (and to some extent still is), though more people today are commuting to Seattle. Partially as a result of its heritage, you will find excellent waterfront restaurants such as Anthony's Homeport and Ray's Boathouse on Shilshole Bay. Nearby are the Ballard Locks (officially the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks), and the Carl S. English Jr. Botanical Gardens.
